Miss Testa told me that in college she wrote a lengthy essay about the book because she loved it so much. I asked my dad about this particular and his response was that he thought very highly about Ernest Hemingway in general, and especially the book The Sun Also Rises. I think The Sun Also Rises is going to be my most challenging book because of the genre, intended audience, and the readers that recommended it to be are older than me. Firstly, the genre makes this choice challenging because I am so familiar with realistic fiction that takes place in modern times and settings that I can directly relate to. The Sun Also Rises was published in 1926, so it is obviously not going to have any settings or technology in common with my life. As I continued reading, I learned that the book was two friends named Jacob and Robert. They are originally from Kansas City, but are in Paris at the moment because they are veterans from World War I. This aspect of the book brings me to the first reason why this book started to form as a challenge- the unfamiliar setting. They are roaming around Paris and going to these places that I have never even heard of. I’ve never been to Paris, and I don’t have an incredibly clear picture in my mind of what is going on. Also, the time period isn’t the same. They haven’t said what year it is, but from the way the characters talk, the reader can tell it’s probably taking place in the 1920’s or 1930’s. Another reason why The Sun Also Rises is challenging because of the way the characters are written about. The story is told through the eyes of Jacob, and throughout the first chapters, he elaborates on Robert’s life. Through his interpretation of Robert, the reader can learn about the way he thinks of other people, but not as much about his personal life. One text-to-self connection I can make is with Robert Cohn. One minor struggle he faces is that he is trying to be an author. In the beginning of the book, Jake often inquires about how his writing is going. Robert appears to be going through a lot of frustration, and claims that writing his second book is a lot harder than the first. I can relate to this because I have experienced similar feelings of frustration. I can’t say I’m a published author yet, but I can say I have hundreds of the beginnings of stories that I’ve started and never quite finished. You’d think we us authors are writing out of pure enjoyment (which mostly, we are), but there is a certain amount of stress that comes with writing that can bring someone down a lot. A text-to-text connection I can make to The Sun Also Rises is to the book is to the Clique Series. Now, when it comes to author’s talent and overall magnificence of the literature, Ernest Hemingway dominates the author of the preteen Clique series Lisi Harrison. Yet, they both somehow deal with similar things when it comes to character relationship and how one person interacts with the other. In The Sun Also Rises, miscommunication is an issue. It surprised me how much arguing went on and that there was plenty of drama between friends in Hemingway’s world. Robert and Jake have gone through problems with their friendship that even they, being adults, can’t solve. It is clear to me that Jake is jealous of Robert, and his jealousy is what makes it so they can’t live peacefully as friends. In the Clique series, there is much less depth but even more miscommunication and arguing. The main characters, who are supposed to be best friends, talk behind each other’s backs and gang up on one another. Despite the fighting, they haven’t done much to stop it. A text-to-world connection I immediately thought of in the book was the idea of adventure and not realizing that there is so much more to do in the world than you could even imagine. In The Sun Also Rises, Robert Cohn wants to get out of Paris badly and travel to South America. This is clear from the very beginning of the book when Hemingway writes that Robert read a book called The Purple Land. This is what sparks his need for travel and wanting to leave Paris for South America. It is a dream of his that Jake seems to discourage, but Robert is insistent on going. This made me think of one of my favorite Pixar movies, Up. This movie describes the story of Carl Fredrickson, an old man who suddenly realizes that he has to fulfill his dream of going to South America. Two vital parts of The Sun Also Rises have been the author’s language and significance of the setting. Hemingway has a distinct type of writing- he comes right out and says almost everything just as it is. There is little dialogue, so you have to pay careful attention to everything Jake (the story is written from his point of view) says. Overall, I think I handled the challenge of reading The Sun Also Rises, by Ernest Hemingway, very well and better than I thought I would have. When I first approached this book, I was weary that I was going to think it was dull just because it was written a pretty long time ago. Now that I have finished the book, I know I have proved myself wrong. Reading this book has opened my eyes to an entire new world of literature. I think readers will enjoy this because people my age are so used to reading books about kids their age, which doesn’t really prepare them at all for what lies ahead of them. I’m going to remember Hemingway’s unique writing style- it seems to be simple with few words of dialogue, but the simplicity is almost deceiving because there is in actually a lot going on. I am looking forward to reading more Hemingway books over the summer, because this has proved to be a phenomenal story of experiencing adventure and life at its best and worst times.
wow. I think the reason that I was attracted to this book so much was that it was written by the Maya Angelou – the same person that my good friend Hayley McGregor did her Influential African Americans in America project on in 7th grade US History. I can still remember being so jealous of her, because Maya Angelou sounded like an such interesting person – and she had some really cool quotes too. I think that I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is a challenging book for me because it takes place in the early to mid-1900’s – a time that I am not familiar with; so there may be some content in the book that I don’t understand.

Now that I have read I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, I know that it wasn’t nearly as challenging in the way that I thought it would be. In fact, it turned out that the unfamiliar time period was the least of my problems; instead, it was the actual writing itself that was giving me all the trouble. Maya Angelou writes with a language and style that is so uniquely hers; big words, long sentences, random flashbacks, all of it amounting up to one confusing story. But, using prior knowledge on the many topics that Maya touched base with in the book, and some of my already existing reading skills, I was usually able to figure out the context of her writing. When I first started reading, it was hard for me to stop after every sentence or paragraph and then decipher its true meaning. But as I continued to read the book, I found that figuring out the point that Maya was trying to get across became easier as I got used to the structure and wording of the sentences.

In the story, segregation plays a big role in how the characters interact with one another. In this way, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings reminded me of the book My Mother, The Cheerleader because they are both about how segregation affects the lives of two young girls. Interestingly though, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is about a Negro girl’s opinion of segregation while My Mother, the Cheerleader is about an American girl’s opinion of segregation. Also, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings connects to the world because even today segregation and discrimination between different cultures and religions is still a major issue. Finally, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings connects to me because in the story, Maya is constantly trying to do the right thing and make the right choice and in my life I am always thinking: how will my decisions affect others? And more importantly, how will my decisions affect myself?

Now that I have finished the book, I realize that even though it was a challenge I was able to use reading skills and my prior knowledge of the subject content to get the full experience that Maya Angelou offered in her writing. In fact, over time it became easier for me to interpret and understand Maya Angelou’s writing style – so that I could see what she was trying to get across to readers. In her autobiography, Maya tells the tale of her life and what it was like to grow up as a young Negro girl in a world of segregation. I think that this book would teach others to treat everyone equally – because even a young girl like Maya knew that it is pointless and wrong. Also, I think that l Know Why the Caged Bird Sings stresses the importance of holding your own in the world – and not letting others take advantage of you. In all, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings was an inspiring book full of emotions and the twists and turns of life. I will remember this book for a long time – because it showed me that if you have enough determination, and passion for life, then you can make it just about anywhere. Maya Angelou is truly an extraordinary writer – and I hope that her heart-felt story will continue to touch the lives of many, many people; like it has done so for me.
Liv!

Your responce was very interesting. I think that it is important to read about the past segrigation and descrimination. Different point of views probably gives the readers different feelings so, it must have been interesting to read from Maya's point of view. This would be a good book to read for me over the summer. The difficult wording will help me ready for 9th grade and I will have a better understanding of the past. I will know to prevent the mistakes that happened a long time ago.
The Five People You Meet in Heaven

I first found this book when Mr. Bucklin took us to the school library. I was having trouble finding a book, so Ms. Testa recommended one she thought I might like. The book was called Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom. Although she thought it was a good book, there was another by the same author which she thought I’d like better. The book was called The Five People You Meet in Heaven. The school library didn’t have this book, so my mom got it for me at OWL. It was such a great book that I finished it in the next two days. The Five People You Meet in Heaven is about an elderly man named Eddie. Eddie was a very depressed old man who thought life had no purpose. As Eddie grew old, his loved ones did as well. He slowly watched them disappear, until there was no one left but him. Once Eddie passed away, he had to go through a process before reaching Heaven. In order to reach Heaven, Eddie had to meet five people whom he affected when he was alive. All of these people were dead, and had some sort of connection to Eddie. Each of these individuals told Eddie their life story, and how he was a part of it. Eddie didn’t even know some of them, but he changed their lives somehow when they were alive. What Eddie came to realize was that everybody’s connected somehow. Before, Eddie thought that he was useless being. What he didn’t know was that he changed people’s lives every day. I would definitely recommend this book to all readers. The Five People You Meet in Heaven can be enjoyed by anybody, because it isn’t a specific genre. The Five People You Meet in Heaven is a mix between realistic fiction, fiction, mystery, and much more. If you ever have the chance, be sure to read The Five People You Meet in Heaven.
Yeah, it's actually a really good book.
Although my book, Rose Madder, was good for the purpose of the McBoy project, it still didn’t really work for me. The whole thing didn’t really work for me. The beginning was pretty good then it started going downhill because it started getting interesting and then it got normal and then it was boring. It was just like any other book. In the middle of the book was when it started to get like any other book. Things started to happen that I had recognized from other books. Also the cool part about the book, and this is probably what I liked most about the book, is that it was a mixture of genres. It was a thriller because when Rose left her husband, little did she know that he was seriously looking for her and when he did there would be major controversy between these two characters. Also another genre mixture that played in the book is a love story, because when Rose leaves her husband another thing she least expects is to find love in her new city that she is welcoming and that is welcoming her as well. Also my book is sort of like a mystery because on Norman’s side, Rose’s husband, who is a sergeant detective, and he is trying to find Rose by the clues she has left behind. Although that mixture does sound great it doesn’t really go in the book, meaning that the book wasn’t that good, and I don’t recommend it. Maybe the book wasn’t so good because I usually don’t read books like that, that have a mix of genres or that are a mystery, I like thriller books though so I can’t whole heartedly not like the book I just don’t think it really worked out for me.
The book that I read for my most challenging book of the year was “Gone” By Michael Grant. Hayley McGregor recommended this book to me at first and said it was fantastic, but she said that she had some trouble with it. I started to read it and I absolutely loved it, though it was kind of confusing because it took place in the future and it was science fiction, so it was out of my comfort zone in the genre. Though I have to say, once I got into it, I got used to the genre and thought it was really interesting. It was also a bit hard keeping track of all the characters, because there were different scenes going on in the book at all times, and it would skip around to each one almost every chapter. Though I do think that the book was a bit easier than I expected it to be, but it was still a pretty good challenge for me. Also, I would totally recommend this book to anyone who is in the mood for an interesting, action filled, jaw dropping read. This book opened my mind to a brand new genre that I never thought that I would have any interest in, and I would hope that it would the same thing for many other readers. I had very little time on my hands to read and on the weekends I had even less time. I regret not reading at times where I chose not to. The March could have been a very dry read. But at the same time it can be a very juicy, interesting read. At first I thought it would be hard to read due to the page length and the different subject would have added to the difficulty. In the future I will remember that The March was a good book about the civil war and that it has a first-hand experience of one of the greatest wars in history waiting for you in paper. I wish I could have finished The march to uncover what else there was. I just haven’t had the luxury of time to read. Hopefully this summer I can back up and find out what happens.

I feel that I handled it very good, especially since it seemed to me that all of the Mcboy essays were pretty easy. As I progressed into the Mcboy project, it was going good. At first it was kind of difficult, but as it went on, it became easier, and I understood it better. On the second Mcboy essay I was able to say that I felt comfortable with the entire project. On the third Mcboy essay, it was easy to write how I felt about the entire thing. Finally, on the last Mcboy essay, I said that the project went good, but the only thing that could have made it better would have been that if I had chosen a more difficult book.
